Legendary band play Academy

Jun 25 2004

Daily Post

The Magic Band play the Liverpool Carling Academy next Friday.

The word legendary is much over-used but for Captain Beefheart's backing band for once the tag is totally legit.

While the retired Captain won't be with them the spirit of the band remains intact with this composite of members spanning all its different incarnations.

The band consists of John French on vocals, drums and harmonica; the Trout Mask Replica era bassist Mark 'Rockette' Morton Boston; Gary 'Mantis' Lucas, the guitarist who played in the final line-up of the band in the early 80's, and Denny "Feelers Rebo" Walley, whose mid-70's Beefheart tenure was preceded by a stint with Frank Zappa.

Auxilliary drummers Robert Williams and Michael Traylor allow French the ability to move forward and sing Beefheart's lyrics.

Support is provided by Liverpool band Iconoclast.

Magic expected from 9pm. Box office 0870 771 2000.
