City visit for Lennon's ex

Mar 22 2005

Liverpool Echo

THE Insider can exclusively reveal that John Lennon's one-time girlfriend May Pang is coming to Liverpool at the end of this month.

May, the former record company secretary who looked after John during his infamous 'lost weekend' separation from Yoko in Los Angeles lasting 18 months, is hoping to do some projects here in the city.

There is talk of an exhibition of rare photographs and she may make a possible return visit to the city for a Beatles convention in August.

May, who lives in New York State, was first here 21 years ago to talk about her book Loving John - The Untold Story.

During her visit she revealed what made her relationship with Lennon so special. "What was great about John and me was that we could sit and talk about music, which was of course his love.

"We loved music from the same time period. He would be amazed that I knew so much because I was so much younger than he was.

"I would always just tell him that I got it first-hand and you got it second-hand. All the rock 'n' roll music that he loved came from America."

Steve Barnes, who runs Takeaflyer, a Liverpool based-PR company, says he will be looking after May during her whistle-stop March 30-31 visit to John's home town.

He said: "I write a column called Letter From Liverpool for a New York based website called Daytrippin.

"Through that connection I heard that May, who worked as a production co-ordinator on John's Walls and Bridges and Rock'n'Roll albums, was coming over and she wanted someone to take her around. She really enjoyed a visit here 21 years ago so she wants to re-discover it again.

"So I will be escorting her to some old haunts while she eyes up certain places. It's exciting - but very hush hush."
