No evidence the Icicle man is melting away

Liverpool singer songwriter, Ian McNabb

WHERE do you go after a 'Best Of' album? Well if you're Ian McNabb, you go onwards, upwards, sideways.

After playing every festival with the Best Of last summer, McNabb is now gigging with his latest album, Before All Of This.

Starting life in Liverpool, McNabb made his name with band The Icicle Works which hogged the charts with hits like Birds Fly and Love is a Wonderful Colour.

The band was 80s cool and had astounding success in both the UK and US, with four albums released in five years.

McNabb still relives the old days by playing tunes from his time in the band at his live gigs.

He says: "I still like playing the tracks that people remember but it was a long time ago and I can hardly remember any of it to be honest."

McNabb then started flying solo and has amassed a hefty back catalogue.

The Liverpudlian rather elegantly nipped over to Los Angeles in 1993 and got Neil Young's band Crazy Horse to produce the album Head Like A Rock. It was later nominated for a Mercury award and had pundits singing its praises for months.

McNabb said: "I don't think Neil was very happy with it all really - nobody else had ever played with them.

"It's probably the equivalent of having someone go out with your exgirlfriend.
