"In a way I want to avoid all the hype," insists Joe, guitarist and singer with band Fiction Plane. "People get excited when they know who your dad is and when labels are interested in our music we have to make sure it's for the right reasons.
"Dad taught me a lot about the industry actually. He's never been told what to do and so we never have. I'm not going to have industry people say 'be this or be that' and I think that comes from him." The 28-year-old, who is London-based, tells us that he's not the only one about to emerge.
"My sister is also very musical so it obviously runs in the family," says Joe.
"We did have a good time growing up, travelling with my dad and seeing things that other children my age would never have got to see and I think he has influenced me."
But for now it's Joe's band who are attracting the attention, with their latest single American Standard and a tour which brings them to Liverpool's Barfly tonight.
And Sumner senior apparently couldn't be happier.
"My dad is proud of me," Joe told Insider.
"He is great, but he's like all dads so he is a bit embarrassing."
