PUNK icons Buzzcocks are to play the Mathew Street Festival.

The music legends join the Stranglers on the main stage of Europe's biggest free music event.

The Liverpool Culture Company is transforming the former Beatles and tribute band festival into a new live performance date for cult groups and singers.

More than £350,000 is being spent giving the three-day August Bank Holiday programme a makeover.

Buzzcocks lead singer Pete Shelley said: "When you are invited to an audience of thousands in Liverpool, there is only one answer - yes!"

The singer added: "This means everything to someone like me.

"Hey Jude was the reason I picked up a guitar. I bought the single before I even owned a record player."

Buzzcocks and the Stranglers will be on the Pier Head stage on Sunday, August 28.

Also signed for the three-day event are Merseyside band Amsterdam.

The 2005 Mathew Street Festival will be the biggest in its 15-year history.
