Shrines to John

Nov 25 2005

By Catherine Jones, Liverpool Echo

BEATLES fans are creating two shrines where people can lay flowers and cards to mark the 25th anniversary of John Lennon's death.

The Liverpool Beatles Appreciation Society hopes hundreds of people will flock to Mathew Street on December 8, the day a quarter of a century ago when Lennon was gunned down in New York.

Organisers say the shrines will be at the Beatles Monument in Cavern Designer Shopping and the Lennon statue in Mathew Street

They are also hoping to display floral tributes to the murdered musician from Liverpool dignitaries and people who had connections with Lennon throughout his life.

Organiser Susie Moore said: "The theme of the shrine within Cavern Designer Shopping is Imagine, Give Peace A Chance, and there will be a short ceremony at 11am with representatives from both Liverpool cathedrals offering prayers for peace." Meanwhile, rare documentary footage and archive material will be shown on the Clayton Square big screen on December 8.

But Lennon's childhood home in Menlove Avenue will not be open to the public, at the request of Yoko Ono.

The society needs more volunteer members, particularly an administrator who can catalogue 29 years of news stories, letters and photos. email liverpoolbeatlesappsociety@yahoo.co.uk or call Susie on 07899 862708.
