LIVERPOOL'S John Lennon airport aims to become a top exhibition space for public art in the run-up to 2008.

JLA chief Neil Pakey has revealed plans to entertain travellers with a range of works as they wait for flights.

He says he would also like to showcase talented artists who live close to the Speke site.

The airport already boasts a statue of John Lennon in the entrance hall and the giant Cammell Laird-built Yellow Submarine outside.

Ideas being considered as the city prepares for Capital of Culture include exhibitions of paintings, sculpture, music, and multi-media installations.

With the airport's owners Peel Holdings taking over the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company (MDHC), the art plan could also be expanded to involve the Port of Liverpool.

Mr Pakey said: "We want to be part of Capital of Culture.

"What's exciting is the way in which the idea is evolving. We're talking about the possibilities for art at both the airport and the docks."

Fiona Gasper, artistic programme manager at the Culture Company, said: " We welcome the chance for local artists to show off their talent.

" It also means incoming visitors will experience Liverpool's culture as soon as they step off the plane."
