A-Ha, Liverpool Summer Pops

IT'S an intriguing sight watching hordes of 30-something women whoop at a pop star marching towards his 50th year.

Vocalist Morten Harket was the ladies' darling during the mid-80s and early 90s when a-ha's hits flowed thick and fast.

If you thought all the languid posturing and brooding looks were banished to his locker, not a bit of it.

Morten, 46, still loves the pretty boy tag.

Thankfully, there is a massive amount of musical talent behind the chiselled jaw that keeps a-ha very much credible.

Reborn in 2000, the synthed-up maestros have since released a trio of mature and well-crafted pop-rock albums that have blunted the inevitable knife-sharpening brigade.

Last night in Liverpool, however, the Scandinavian quintet knew the Scousers wanted the hits and they produced a retrospective 18-song set that never dipped or disappointed.

Two songs in, and Move To Memphis was pulled out of the bag followed by some faultless falsetto on the haunting Stay On These Roads.

It wasn't all plain sailing, with image-conscious Morten perhaps getting too caught up with the adulation to fluff some lines.
