A play that tries to unravel Lennon's mind in his final year

Daily Post

JUST what went on in John Lennon's mind during his final year living in New York?

Liverpool writer Norman Revill is attempting to find out in his play Dead Beat in Dakota.

The drama was first staged two years ago at Liverpool University and again last year at Southport's Little Theatre.

But it is due to get a new major production at Liverpool's Unity Theatre in May.

Casting has been virtually complete but producer Donald Ridland is having problems filling one last role.

Local actor Scott Rowan is taking the part of John Lennon while the play's director, Tracey Batchelor, will be playing Lennon's mother, Julia.

"It's set in the last year of Lennon's life when he is confronted by the ghosts of his past," explains Ridland,

It tries to explain how Lennon reached rock bottom before finding new inspiration and writing and recording his final album Double Fantasy.

Among the ghosts to confront him is former Beatle Stu Sutcliffe, an artist who died tragically early.

"The writer insists that the actor look right for the part which is quite slim and able to look aged around 21. It's a role we have been having problems filling."
