IF you thought getting involved in a triathlon was tough, then spare a thought for Daniel O'Dempsey. Despite being diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma, this tenacious tween is determined to complete one of Merseyside's most formidable challenges. Restricted by treatment, Daniel (pictured above, front row, third from right) is unable to swim. But with the help of his brother - Kieran and sister - Kate, this 12-year-old triplet will be able to take part in July's Sefton Triathlon. The event, newly launched by Olympic hero Steve Redgrave, is the world's largest community competition and incorporates the North West Schools' Triathlon championships. All those involved, including local medallists Steve Smith and Steve Parry, will be expected to raise a total of more than £150,000 for Macmillan Cancer Relief and the British Heart Foundation at Alder Hey Children's Hospital. "I'll be cycling, whilst Kate swims and Kieran runs," explains Daniel, a pupil at St Mary's College in Crosby. We don't expect to win but it will be a fun way to raise money for charity whilst helping others. "We've done it before but it was harder last time because I was undergoing full chemotherapy. They've reduced the dose this year, so I should be okay." Their mum - Theresa O'Dempsey - a doctor - adds: "The triplets are really looking forward to taking part in the triathlon. Daniel likes to be involved in everything the other two do and being ill hasn't held him back in any way." Redgrave gave his backing to the event on Friday, stating that it encouraged children of all ages and abilities to get more active. "Events like this triathlon are important in that they allow children to participate in different kinds of activity, be focused and get prepared," he says. "More importantly, it's a wonderful way to raise money for charity."

Steve Redgrave's Tips On Preparing For The Sefton Triathlon: 1. Enjoy what you're doing. It's difficult training on your own, so get friends and family involved. 2. Start gently by walking, then build up to a run. 3. Rotate the three different types of exercise, working on distance and speed. 4. And don't forget - while training is important, competing is the best bit. |
