Making your house a home

Midweek Advertiser, Liverpool Echo

MAKING a fresh start in your new home means making the most of what your chosen property has to offer.

Putting your own stamp on a new home can be difficult, but here are a few tips on how to make your new house feel like your new home.

There are many advantages to buying a new home. As well as all the up to date fixtures, plumbing, insulation and heating, there is the fact a new house doesn't feel like someone else's. You have a blank canvas on which you can create a home - exactly as you want it.

Here are some top tips: Make sure you get all your family photos out as soon as possible. Surrounding yourself with memories of friends and family will make you feel at home.

Get your stereo set up straight away - songs that are familiar and special to you are great for bringing back good memories.

Don't survive on takeaway for the first few weeks - find the local shops and get stocked up. The smell of good food cooking will make your house seem homelier straight away.

Meet the neighbours! Why not go and introduce yourself - the chances are they'll be able to give you some local advice.

If you've moved to a completely new area then, if you haven't already, investigate - take a walk and see what surrounds you - there is sure to be plenty of places that interest you.

* The sooner you sort out all those boxes the better - seeing your own ornaments and furniture will give your blank canvas your own style. Make sure you unpack your suitcases too, that way everything is in your wardrobe or drawers - like it is at home!

* Have a party! The best way to make your house seem like home is to invite all your friends and family round for a housewarming. Showing off your new home will make them envious, and make you sure you made the right decision.

* If you have children, remember it can be stressful for them, too, so why not let them have a party too. They could invite old and new friends, maybe from their new school? It will help them settle in as well as make friends.

* If you have any pets, then let them explore the home in their own time. Some may settle in easier than others, but as long as they have fresh food and water and a cosy place to sleep, they'll soon feel at home too.

Buying a new home means it is sure to be warm and cosy for winter - and following these tips will make your new house feel truly yours.
