Liverpool Echo

WORLD number one Tiger Woods has been named PGA Tour player of the year for the eighth time in 10 years.

The American won eight tournaments, including the Open and the US PGA Championship, in another outstanding year.

"Tiger has shown a remarkable ability to raise his game to the highest level and then sustain that excellence," said PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem.

"Winning the Jack Nicklaus Trophy for the eighth time in 10 years is testimony to his greatness."

Woods also won the Arnold Palmer Award for leading the Tour in earnings (£5.02million) and the Byron Nelson Trophy for having the lowest scoring average (68.11).

South African Trevor Immelman, who collected £1.9million in earnings, was named rookie of the year while Steve Stricker was named comebackplayer of the year.

Stricker posted seven top-10 finishes in 17 starts.
