Misalignment of the club face at address

Golfnorthwest, By Andy Stevenson

FINDING your target is a lot easier if you actually aim the clubface at it. This is obvious, but not always easy to achieve.

The difficulty in golf is that you stand to the side of the ball in order to hit it and as a result your eyes can fool you into thinking the club-face is square to the target when in fact it is not. When this happens you have no choice but to compensate during your swing to get the ball on line. This will inevitably lead to inconsistency.

Try this simple exercise to help line the club up correctly. Place a club on the ground, pointing directly at the target. Take your normal stance and grip and hold a second club up waist high in front of you making sure that the leading edge is vertical, is, pointing up towards 12 o'clock.

The next stage requires precision.

Without changing the angle of the face in any way, lower the club-head so that the leading edge forms a perfect right angle with the shaft you laid on the ground.

If this looks odd you must have been in the wrong position for some time. When comfortable, try some balls, trusting that the club-face is square.

Do not worry if the ball flies off line at first. You will soon adjust instinctively to the change.
