An island of many delights

By Graham Carter, Golfers' Chronicle

MAJORCA in May is popular but not overly busy, which makes it all the more enjoyable.

It affords the visitor more space and time to take in and appreciate the lovely atmosphere, architecture and sights of the island's main attraction and capital, Palma de Mallorca. Over the centuries, this city has been touched by the hands of travellers from across Europe and the Mediterranean resulting in a blend of architectural styles which tends to please the eye rather than jar the senses.

Amid the picturesque squares there are countless restaurants and shops, but the museums and the huge, imposing cathedral continue to be the main attractions.

A 10 - 15 minutes drive from Palma takes you far from the madding crowds and into the five star world of the stunning Castillo Son Vida and The ArabellaSheraton Hotels. These magnificent establishments offer guests unrivalled service, luxurious accommodation, Michelin Star quality cuisine, and the added bonus of two superb golf courses.

The Son Vida course is the oldest on Majorca, and because it was built before the days of titanium drivers and 13.5° three woods, its 5,600 metres (approximately 6,200 yards) may not seem much of a challenge on the card. Don't be fooled! Undulating, narrow and tree-lined fairways ensure that accuracy is far more important than distance, and it is the wise golfer who considers the safest option before automatically reaching for the driver. Son Vida winds its way through mature woodland and past some breathtaking villas, and although it isn't a flat course by any means, walking the beautifully manicured fairways seems to me a better option than taking a buggy and having to play 'resort golf'.

Conversely, Son Muntaner is one of the youngest of Majorca's courses, and is of undoubted championship quality. It is visually stunning, well designed and thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end. This is 6,347 metres of blissful golf. Players can 'open their shoulders' here and not get into too much trouble, but a deft touch and nerves of steel are required to master the greens.

As Son Muntaner is reserved for the exclusive use of members and hotel guests, the course is never really packed and tee times are almost always available. In turn, because the course isn't over played, it's in impeccable condition all year round and a real joy to play.
