OUR love affair with the 4x4 continues despite the credit crunch and there is an ever-widening range of makes and models on offer. Suzuki has long been a strong player with the wide choice from its Grand Vitara range, which includes three and five door models with various powerplants. The previously available 1.6 and 2.0-litre engines were always a bit breathless but the latest 2.4-litre sorts that out in one fell swoop. It's gutsy and powerful and has decent low range pulling power while at the same time being probably the smoothest engine in the range. Road holding and handling are improved over previous models and good grip also helps make the corners more fun. But the ride suffers quite badly, even though it is better in the five door than in the smaller model. The Vitara's biggest plus is a very reasonable price compared to all rivals of the same size, although it does suffer from more depreciation over the first three years. Interior The inside feels good, with decent quality fit and finish and stylish looks. There is plenty of space for five and all their gear. Safety and security are both up to the class average, with front, side and curtain airbags, permanent four wheel drive, electronic stability control and deadlocks.
