WHERE TO ... EAT If the prospect of cooking your own meals now you're an independent grown-up is still to much to bear, there are a few fine eateries where you can get a decent meal in a great setting with little financial damage. Hard to spot, but worth the effort, Egg (16-18 Newington) is a Vegan delight and even if you not adverse to the odd dead animal it's still worth it for the milkshakes alone. The two branches of Kimos (46 Mount Pleasant and 24 Myrtle St) both handily located in studentland, supply cheap and filling, loosely Mediterranean offerings that will keep you going all day. If traditional American fast food served in a 50s diner atmosphere is your thing then Eddie Rockets (23 Bold Street) is the place for you. With all meals looking and tasting as they should, you won't leave here hungry. The only drawback is it's a bit dearer than your normal burger bar, but it's well worth it with burgers the size of small houses. For a big meal on the cheap, Caesar's Palace (2-9 Renshaw St.) is a great place to get high-quality fast food. If you want to go for something a little more exotic, but still on budget May Sum (First floor. St. Johns Centre) is Liverpool's largest 'all you can eat' Chinese buffet restaurant and has special student discounts so you can stuff your face even more. Nando's (Unit 6, Queen Square) is another perfect place for a cheap meal, probably best to stay away if you don't like chicken though. For something a little more sophisticated but still affordable try The Quarter (7-11 Falkner St.) for some authentic Italian cuisine in fine surroundings, ideal for lunches or main meals. WHERE TO ... DRINK Bored with the Union bar despite its wallet-friendly prices? Then head to some one of Liverpool's excellent watering holes. Baa Bar (43-45 Fleet St.) is not to be missed, with its legendary selection of cheap shooters to get you in the party mood fast. Nearby, the Beatles-memorabilia filled Jacaranda (21-23 Slater St.) is one of the few pubs where locals, visitors and student co-exist comfortably while Bar Cava (4A Wood St.) is a tequila-lover's paradise and even if the Mexican spirit makes you retch, the battered sofas and poster-clad walls make it ace place to catch up and get slowly drunk. Ye Cracke (13 Rice St.) is where Lennon and co used to hang where they were skiving off the nearby art school and this proud tradition is carried on by today's students, many attracted as much by the prospect of cheap treble spirits as the cosy atmosphere. It's a Scream bar (Maryland Street) is almost a second students union, located just beside The Haigh. With cheap food and drinks on offer, it's the perfect place to start a night out or relax watching the football. Not to be outdone, a similar drinks offer is also available at the nearby Pilgrim (34 Pilgrim St.) another arty little establishment particularity popular with drama students. Conveniently located at the heart of Liverpool University's campus The Cambridge (5-7 Mulberry St.) attracts both students and lecturers in need of a tipple and on a nice day they will give you your poison in a plastic glass so you can sup your pint on the grass of the nearby Abercromby Sq. Head of Steam (7 Lime St) located below student accommodation Northwestern Halls, is great place for cheap Sunday dinner or cheap drinks before a night out. For other outdoor drinking opportunities Hannah's Bar (2 Leece St.) is a great spec to sit and watch life on the street while you sip a beverage and Modo's (Concert Sq.) is a good place to start a big night, with seats outside and funky beats indoor. WHERE TO ... CHILL Hungover? In need of study break or fancy a romantic sojourn with your new girl/boyfriend? Then theses are some places to remember. The aforementioned Abercromby Square is an ideal secluded spot to sit in the sun and get into those books or take a break and toss a Frisbee. Alternatively, head down towards the river, get an ice cream and watch the ships go by at the Pier Head. But if you really want to get away, your best bet is jump a number 82 bus for the south of the city and take a wander in Sefton Park. Stroll along the lake or take a peak in its famous Palm House - brimming with tropical plants. For even more seclusion jump on the Merseyrail Northern line and head for Freshfield, a tranquil moonscape of a beach and its adjacent nature reserve with rare red squirrels. |
