St John's Beacon

ST JOHN'S Beacon rises above the bustling shopping centre of Liverpool; a modern tower contrasting with much of the older architecture with which it vies for attention.

The St John's Beacon is currently the home of the Radio City radio station, and is regularly lit up at night in dazzling colours.

It has had an eventful history to compete with many other, older buildings, since work began on the structure in the 1960s.

Home to the Tower Restaurant for many years, fire swept through the St John's shopping centre it rises above in 1977, and new fire regulations forced the tower's closure for a time.

After that it was the subject of a number of development proposals, largely because of the incredible views it commands across the city.

The tower rises to a height of 452 feet above sea level, and 335 feet above the nearby Williamson Square.
