THE Tate Gallery, Liverpool, opened in 1988 following a massive regeneration project which focused on bringing the Albert Dock, originally built in 1824, back to life.
With the demise of the shipping industry in Liverpool the Dock fell into disrepair by the early 1970s and it languished for ten years until Government money was earmarked for its redevelopment.
The complex of Grade I listed buildings was finally granted the attention it so badly needed when it was identified as a prime area for inner city regeneration in the wake of the Toxteth riots of 1981.
Established in converted warehouses, the Tate is a modern art space created according to the designs of James Stirling, Michael Wilford and Associates.
